YouTube Reportedly Changes Algorithm To Combat Captain Marvel Trolls

Captain Marvel may have a serious Skrull problem on the big screen, but here in reality the Captain's big antagonist is a horde of different creatures, internet trolls. The newest Marvel movie was dealing was a large group of internet trolls who began review bombing Captain Marvel before the movie ever actually hit theaters. At the same time it was happening, Rotten Tomatoes made some changes to its site, and now it looks like YouTube might have made a slight tweak to its algorithm to avoid the same problem.

An eagle-eyed fan on Twitter discovered, and it was confirmed by CNET, that if you enter either Captain Marvel on Brie Larson in the search bar of YouTube, the resulting list defaults to the "News" heading rather than just giving you a random list of popular videos. Searching for Brie Larson will give you interviews she has done recently or other more factual based videos. Here's what you get if you search for Larson...

On the other hand, here's what you get if you just do a search for Avengers: Endgame. Notice, there's no news header at the top and the videos that appear are theory and opinion videos rather than interviews about the film.

It certainly appears that a switch got flipped somewhere at YouTube, as the videos are quite different for Captain Marvel related searches. While YouTube hasn't currently commented on the situation, many are wondering if the site made the change to push the trolling and review bombing posts further down the page to make them harder for people to find.

This comes after Rotten Tomatoes made changes to the way the audience score for movies is handled on the site. While RT claims Captain Marvel was not the reason the change was made, the fact is the movie was certainly being hit by a deluge of negative reviews that came before any of those commenting could have seen the film, which showed the movie was clearly a victim of the practice. YouTube would have a hard time claiming this was a Captain Marvel issue, as it's the only movie seemingly effected.

The campaign of negative criticism did not appear to have much impact on Captain Marvel. The movie did massive business over its opening weekend and, while the critical reviews haven't been quite as glowing as previous MCU entries, the majority of people, both critic and general fan, seem to like the movie.

Of course, this decision doesn't simply hurt the trolls. It will also have an impact on Captain Marvel content that isn't trying to be inflammatory, that might actually be complementary. It's all going to get pushed to the bottom, which could be a larger issue for YouTube in general.

Midnight Texas' Dylan Bruce Pitched A Nude Scene That's Probably Too Far For NBC

Midnight, Texas is back for Season 2 this week. This time around, we already know the show is making plenty of changes, including planning to get sexier and "more salacious." Expect a lot of bumping and grinding from multiple characters in the new episodes, including from Dylan Bruce and Parisa Fitz-Henley, who play Bobo and Fiji on the show. One of the scenes fans won't be seeing, however, is a hilarious nude scene that Midnight, Texas' Bruce actually pitched to the creative team ahead of Season 2.

In an interview with CinemaBlend and other reporters on the set of Midnight, Texas in the desert outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dylan Bruce revealed that sometimes he is a creative type while the show is coming together. In short, he's a man of ideas. Ahead of Season 2, he revealed that he pitched a fun scene he really wanted to see Fiji and Bobo get into in the bedroom. Alas, the pitch will likely only live on through these glorious quotes. Per Bruce:

Well, Bobo and Fiji are doing the nasty quite often and there's this scene in Thelma and Louise where Brad Pitt dances with a cowboy hat over his junk and I was like, 'Can you guys write me a scene where I dance with a cowboy hat over my junk. I think it would be really fun. And Eric's like, 'I'll think about it.' I don't think that would have made it past network standards and practices, but... they showed Milo's butt on This is Us. C'mon!

While Dylan Bruce seemed jazzed about his cowboy hat pitch, he also mentioned the scene may not make sense for the primetime network TV show even if the new season has showrunners who are super pop culture savvy and could get behind a Thelma and Louise nod. Then again, Milo Ventimiglia did get a very revealing nude scene in that other NBC network primetime series, so now that the producers know Bruce is still hoping to play a cowboy down the line perhaps we'll get a racy scene of this ilk at some point. What's definitely true is that we can't expect to see that particular plot rear its head in the new episodes.

Still, Midnight, Texas certainly has a lot of romantic connections heading into its second season on NBC. The relationship between Bobo and Fiji is one of the big ones and we are going to see them in a lot of interesting sexual positions during the new episodes. Sadly, even a late night Friday series is still subject to network standards and viewer will only get to see what the network standards allow. As much as Dylan Bruce was pumped for his pitch to producers Nicole Snyder and Eric Charmelo, it doesn't look like we'll be seeing Bruce wearing nothing but a cowboy hat in Season 2. We will see him shirtless a lot, however.

This year on Midnight, Texas, the series shot during the summer months, which really helped for all of the shirtless scenes, especially when Joe (Jason Lewis) rips his shirt off to fly outside. As for Dylan Bruce, he really just hopes all of those half-nude scenes are worth it for the viewer. There's been a lot of self-sacrifice that has gone into looking that fit for the NBC series. Per the actor:

I'll tell you this much, I'm surprised I have even shirts in my wardrobe, because I literally do not wear a shirt all season long. And it has been such a pain in the ass, let me tell you. I just want to eat a burger for chrissake.

Fellow Midnight, Texas actress Parisa Fitz-Henley, who plays Fiji on the series, did tell CinemaBlend a little bit about what we can expect from the Bobo and Fiji relationship in Season 2. Besides the sex, there may be a little trouble in paradise. She talked about the creative decision to get them together before noting,

I thought the Bobo and Fiji story might stretch out longer the way that it does in the books, but then you know I feel like the creators have been able to make sense of the decisions that they've made as we've gone along, even if they've changed the timeline of something. So, I was surprised, but I was like, 'Alright, here we go. We're doing this!' We're gonna do this romance here. Then, I love that of course it's never simple. It's like here, get together, oh guess what, he's a Nazi. Oops. I mean, he's not, but you know, it's complicated.

We already know that Bobo has a neo-Nazi family out there who invited him to join in on nefarious acts as a teenager. He later fled, but even before the series was renewed for Season 2, the creative team was discussing how this story could affect the relationship between the main characters. We've heard from Francois Arnaud, Dylan Bruce and other cast members that the new episodes will feature fewer standalones that delve into backstory, but the characters origins will still come into play in other ways. In fact, due to info we know about Bobo's family and Fiji's previous history with her former lover, Jeremy, whom she killed, Bobo and Fiji's relationship is expected to get complicated in Season 2. Regardless, before that happens, Midnight, Texas will be having a lot of fun with the new couple, especially in the bedroom. Unfortunately, no cowboy hats will be involved.

As filming wraps up on Midnight, Texas and the viewer gets the first taste of Season 2, we hope Dylan Bruce gets that burger to celebrate. Hell, we hope he gets burgers to celebrate, although we'll have to wait and see how the supernatural series does in its brand new timeslot. We've seen multiple iterations of Spider-Man's Aunt May on the big screen in the last 16 years, but Lily Tomlin's version in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is completely different than what Rosemary Harris, Sally Field and Marisa Tomei have done. Sure, she's as loving and protective as any other take, but what sets her apart is her deep involvement in her nephew's vigilante activities. She's definitely not the damsel in distress she's been depicted as in the past -- and it was one element of the character that the actress playing her really valued:

I love that. It's more fun to always play someone like that then a damsel in distress, as they are more inclined to write a part like that. So that was fun. I just did it, so I was glad I did it... I think it's great because to have a character like Aunt May, an older woman who lays it down like it is, and lets people kind of go on and carry on and then she tells them what the score is.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse notably doesn't follow Peter Parker as its central hero, but does still have a key role for Aunt May to play. Specifically, while her actual nephew is killed in the first act of the movie, she winds up teaming with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and the alternate dimension Peter Parker (Jake Johnson) to try and stop Kingpin (Liev Schreiber) from activating his super collider and destroying the city. Saying exactly how she helps is a bit spoiler-y, but she does play an important role.

I got to discuss the role of Aunt May in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse with Lily Tomlin a couple weeks ago when I sat down with the actress during the film's Los Angeles press day. Being familiar with the many different versions of the character we've seen in popular culture, I was curious how she felt about not playing the standard -- put into some perilous situation that requires rescue from the webslinger. As it happens it was something that she definitely appreciated, partially because it offered something new and didn't go the easy route.

Overall it was very much a project of which Lily Tomlin loved being a part, expressing love for the diversity that the animated feature offers, and the fact that it's a special take introducing audiences to a character they may have never heard of before. And the fact that her version of Aunt May has an active and important role in all of it was a very real bonus. Tomlin explained,

What's so wonderful is that it's so loving and familiar, and yet it's conflict and people trying to resolve their problems. They don't do it in any easy way. And when they come to Aunt May she's ready to take them on and help they and support them.
