Zachary Levi Asks Fans To Stop Pitting Shazam Against Captain Marvel

Over the next two months, both Captain Marvel and Shazam! will release in theaters, which -- as comic book fans know -- is a fun bit of cosmic irony. The hero Shazam was formerly known as Captain Marvel, and now the two are getting their first blockbuster movies in a short span of each other. It's pretty funny! What's not funny is seeing trolls attempt to review bomb Captain Marvel in an apparent defense of DC and Shazam! Well, Zachary Levi isn't having any of that and he has a message for those "fans."

Despite the fact that critics who have screened Captain Marvel had extremely positive things to say about the movie, some people have taken it upon themselves to damage the movie before they've even seen it. Trolls attempted to review bomb Captain Marvel on Rotten Tomatoes, trying to lower the movie's score. At least part of this behavior can be traced to the DC-Marvel feud some fans still harbor, but Zachary Levi is not one of those people.

In a live video message on social media (saved via Twitter), Zachary Levi asked people to stop attacking Captain Marvel and Brie Larson in defense of Shazam! Levi said that kind of behavior doesn't help anyone and that these people are just making up bad things about Captain Marvel. The actor also emphasized there is "no competition" between the two movies, outside of the fact that they are releasing around a similar time frame. No one is pitted against each other here except in the minds of these trolls.

Shazam! director David F. Sandberg had some fun a few months ago, throwing playful shade at Captain Marvel when posting a fan poll showing more excitement for his movie. But he too recently tweeted about the Captain Marvel trolls, writing, "I for one look forward to Captain Marvel making all the money in the world to shut some of these people up."

Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who becomes the hero Captain Marvel after she finds herself imbued with cosmic powers from an alien species. Shazam! follows Billy Batson, a young boy who is granted the ability to turn into a super-powered adult alter ego (Zachary Levi) by a wizard.

The two are completely different characters but they share an odd history involving their names that might be contributing to these online attacks.

To make a long story short, Shazam used to be known as Captain Marvel for several decades before DC finally changed his name to avoid confusion. Marvel trademarked the name for themselves in the '60s, so when DC started publishing its own Captain Marvel comics in 1972, they couldn't legally market them by that name. So, the comics, toys and various other media were called Shazam -- even though the character was still Captain Marvel. Pretty much anyone growing up with this character thought his name was Shazam anyway, so DC finally gave in and changed the name to Shazam in 2011.

Absolutely none of that had anything to do with the Carol Danvers version of the superhero.

Good on Zachary Levi for stepping in and pointing out how silly this whole feud has become. Both movies look fun, and I'm sure there are a ton of fans looking forward to seeing the both of them.

Captain Marvel arrives in theaters on March 8, and Shazam! makes its debut on April 5.

Cillian Murphy's Odds To Play James Bond Have Gone Way Up

The next James Bond movie has been slightly delayed, but the movie is happening, and Daniel Craig will be back in the lead role. Of course, it seems quite likely that Craig will be done after this next film and whatever happens, at some point, sooner rather than later, Craig will be done playing Bond, but the role will certainly go on. The question of who the next James Bond will be will exist until there is one, and right now the odds on Cillian Murphy getting the role just got a lot better.

When I talk about the odds, I'm speaking quite literally, as I'm talking about bookmakers in Britain who actually do keep odds on who the next James Bond will be. Cillian Murphy had seen odds of 7/1 but those odds have just dropped to 100/30 (slightly worse than 3/1 if you don't want to do the math). He's not the front runner, but he's now in second place behind Tom Hiddleston and Richard Madden who both have 2/1 odds.

If there's a reason the odds have gotten so much better for Murphy, it's not entirely clear. His name has never been entirely absent from any conversation about the next James Bond. When Danny Boyle was set to direct the next film, but before Daniel Craig had agreed to return, Yahoo says Murphy's name had come up a possible replacement, but obviously it never came to that.

Murphy may be best known for playing the villain Scarecrow in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins. He also had a role in Nolan's WWII epic Dunkirk and has had a successful TV run on the series Peaky Blinders.

Considering the time that it took to get Daniel Craig to commit to playing James Bond one more time, it seems likely this will be his last go-round as the super spy, though the film has not been announced to be his last. If he hasn't already told producers this is his last, then assume we'll all go through the "will he, won't he" one more time as Eon Productions tries to get him to do one more movie, before the producers even consider looking elsewhere.

Once we get there, however, there are a lot of interesting candidates. Everybody from Idris Elba to Tom Hardy has been rumored as a possible Bond in the past. Expect all of them to get thrown into the mix once again. Even an actor who might not have been a hot prospect a couple years ago when producers were last looking could be in a very different place a couple years from now when the hunt is on again. There will probably be some young actors who aren't even on our radar now who will also be contenders.

The Moment In The Hobbs And Shaw Trailer Thats Very Special To Dwayne Johnson

Earlier this month at CinemaCon, Universal Pictures threw all of its energy into celebrity performances from the likes of Octavia Spencer, Kevin Hart (holding a rabbit meant to represent his Secret Life of Pets 2 character), Tiffany Haddish, Danny BoyleI could go on and on. But the particular highlight was a new Hobbs & Shaw trailer, which really amped the energy in the room.

Ahead of that happening though, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and David Leitch were in attendance to talk about why the Hobbs & Shaw Fast and Furious spinoff movie is going to deliver the goods. The three men talked about how the Fast and Furious spinoff movie combines the cultures that Johnson and Statham are familiar with and grew up in, and theres a specific moment shown in the trailer that is very near and dear to Dwayne Johnsons heart.

Heres what he revealed:

Theres a moment in [the] trailer where the energy changes and theres something called the Haka. You guys familiar with the Haka? OK great. Well, we dont do that in this movie. But what we do is called the Siva Tau. The Siva Tau is the Samoan version of the Haka and we still call upon our ancestors. [In this trailer] I leave the Siva Tau and for the very first time in a blockbuster tentpole movie were very proud to showcase our two cultures, England and culture Samoa.

Theres been a push to incorporate more from a diverse variety of cultures in movies lately. In fact, the Haka that Dwayne Johnson mentions was put to use at the Aquaman premiere by Jason Momoa and that culture was brought into that movie as well.

Dwayne Johnson is both black and Samoan and he has been open about his familys history and his pride related to that history. He recently tweeted about how he was able to transcend race in wrestling so that he wouldnt just get booked that way," but he's ready to share his heritage in a big way in Hobbs & Shaw.

Johnson went on to state at CinemaCon 2019:

Its the very first time weve seen Samoa ever featured and ever showcased in the movieYes we have the explosions and the epic-ness of everything youd expect from a Fast and Furious movie but now you also have this mana, the spirit that we lived in Jason and I, David, all of us.

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham went on to talk about the hugging and joke about too close huggingas well as talk about the camaraderie on the set of Hobbs & Shaw. So even though Deckard Shaw and Luke Hobbs have a bit of a competitive relationship, its clear the idea of family thats such a big deal to the Fast and Furious franchise is going to translate into this new offshoot as well.

In terms of the Siva Tau, the Samoan war dance, weve already seen a preview of this sort of chanting thanks to an official photo shared by Dwayne Johnson himself.

If that image doesnt already give you an idea of the vibe of Hobbs & Shaw perhaps a look at the new trailer is what you need.

Now that weve seen a the sneak preview at the scene, Im very hopeful that youll get to see the special moment that was a big deal for Dwayne Johnson soon. After all Hobbs & Shaw is officially released on Friday August 2, which is not so very far away. More footage is coming and it will definitely be an explosive day when it does.
