Paul Bettany Thought His Career Was Over When Joss Whedon Called About Vision

Actor Paul Bettany has been a consistent presence on the big screen since around the turn of the century, with memorable roles in films like A Knight's Tale and Master and Commander, not to mention A Beautiful Mind. In 2008 he joined the first Iron Man as the voice of JARVIS when the MCU was just getting off of the ground. But Hollywood is a rough business, and Paul Bettany's career was not always on an upward trajectory. In fact, he was told that his time as an actor was over not that long ago. It was at this point of thinking that his career might actually be over that he received a call from Joss Whedon about playing Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron, as Paul Bettany explained recently at Ace Comic Con:

I had just got done with a meeting with a producer who told me my career was over. That it was done, and that I should pack my bags and go home. And I kind-of stood up to him and I said, 'Listen, you know, in this town actors have second and third acts, and you should mind your fucking manners.' And I walk out and then my legs give way, because I think maybe my career's over. Then I sit down on the sidewalk on Sunset and I went, 'Wow, maybe my career's over.' My phone rang; I answered it, and it was a number I didn't recognize. I went 'hello.' [He said] 'It's Joss Whedon.' I went,' Oh hi Joss.' He says, 'You want to play the Vision in The Avengers?' I went, 'Yes I do, thank you very much.'

Sometimes you get lucky and things come along in life at exactly the moment you need them to and that's what happened to Paul Bettany with that call from famous director Joss Whedon. This must have been quite the whirlwind of emotions in the span of a short period of time. Paul Bettany was defiant at the assertion that his career was over, but then was forced to consider the possibility. I can't imagine what it must be like to have someone tell you that but it's got to be infuriating and a bit demoralizing. So, to have an onscreen role in the biggest franchise in the world come right at that time was likely an amazing bit of serendipity that felt like a huge weight being lifted off his shoulders. I like how he responded to Joss Whedon too, with a very calm, matter-of-fact response, not letting on how exciting or what a relief the opportunity must have been.

As Paul Bettany recounted in a panel with Kevin Smith at ACE Comic Con, plenty of actor's careers have been presumed dead only to suddenly have a pulse and then roar back to life. Fellow MCU-er Robert Downey Jr. is a good example of this, as he's also doing pretty well for himself these days. Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot almost quit acting before landing the role of the Amazonian, as did David Harbour before Stranger Things and Kelly Marie Tran before Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

I'm not sure why the producer would have declared Paul Bettany's career over. Around that time he was probably coming off his role in Priest, so perhaps that film's critical and commercial reception is why the producer jumped to that conclusion. Luckily the MCU has kept him pretty busy. In the time since Avengers: Age of Ultron and his first outing as Vision, Paul Bettany has appeared in Captain America: Civil War and his character played a crucial role in this year's Avengers: Age of Ultron. Outside of the MCU, he also joined the Star Wars franchise in Solo: A Star Wars Story and played Ted Kaczynski in the acclaimed mini-series Manhunt: Unabomber. Clearly that producer was mistaken and Paul Bettany's career was not over, even if it felt like it at the time.

As for Paul Bettany's role as Vision moving forward, that, like much of the MCU's future, is still a mystery but perhaps we will see him again in Avengers 4. For all the latest on the noble android, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

The Surprising Way Steve Carell And Robert Zemeckis Came Together On Welcome To Marwen

Most actors come aboard a film in one of two ways: either they audition, or they are specifically chosen for the part. This was not the case for Steve Carell in the making of Welcome To Marwen, however. Rather than going out for the part or reading a script, Carell's path to the film was motivated by the fact that he was inspired by the source material, and through that inspiration just happened to discover Robert Zemeckis was already making the movie. The actor recently told me,

This one in particular, it wasn't offered to me. It wasn't a script. I think this is the first time this has ever happened. I saw the documentary Marwencol and I loved it, and I couldn't stop thinking about it, and I wanted to pursue it in some way, and see if it could be expanded into a feature. I found out that Robert Zemeckis had the rights, and we got together, and he told me what his vision of it was, and that's how I got involved.

I sat down with Steve Carell earlier this month during Welcome To Marwen Los Angeles press day, and learned about his serendipitous path to the project at the start of the interview. Acknowledging that he has three movies out this fall (Marwen, Beautiful Boy, and Vice), I asked about his project selection and he explained that the way he teamed up with Robert Zemeckis wasn't the typical Hollywood way.

Funny enough, Steve Carell's reaction to the Marwencol documentary was very similar to his director's. I first spoke with Robert Zemeckis about the project -- then called The Women Of Marwen -- during the press tour for his last film, Allied, and he explained how he had seen the film while channel surfing and found himself filled with immediate desire to adapt the story as a narrative feature.

In particular, Steve Carell was struck by the story of Mark Hogancamp, a man who survived a brutal beating and suffered debilitating memory loss, but rediscovered artistic expression via the creation and photography of a sixth-scale World War II-era Belgian village. Carell felt a special need to expose the world to Hogancamp's story, and felt the best way to do that was through Welcome To Marwen. He explained,

The character of Mark Hogancamp was somebody that I was fascinated by and I thought, you know, here's a story that definitely needed to be told. And I was hoping that maybe a feature could bring his story to even a larger audience, and be impactful that way.

After learning about Steve Carell's particular path to the film, I had the chance to follow up with Robert Zemeckis -- though the writer/director actually downplayed the influence of the fact that Carell came to him with his own interest in making the movie. Instead what he was far more interested in was the actor's incredible talent and ability to connect with an audience.

Well, that helped for sure. But my passion for Steve was because he's such a fantastic dramatic actor, and he's obviously a great comedic actor, and he has this great empathy, this ability to portray empathy on the screen. He has this wonderful every man quality, and he fit the bill. It was just another great plus that he was attracted to the material.

It has been a great year for buzzy Netflix movies -- from the prestige pics Roma and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, to rom-coms like Set It Up and a new action classic like The Night Comes for Us. Netflix is capping off the year in a big way with the sci-fi horror film Bird Box. The famously secretive Netflix has lifted the blindfold to reveal that the Sandra Bullock film has set a new viewing record for the service. Take a look:

In a year full of big and buzzy Netflix movies, it appears that Bird Box tops them all. According to Netflix, over 45 million accounts checked out the Susanne Bier-directed film in just the first seven days. Based on the subscriber numbers Netflix released in the fall, that would mean that around a third of Netflix's 137 million worldwide subscriber base tuned in to watch Sandra Bullock stumble around the woods in a blindfold.

Clearly there was some major interest in this movie among Netflix subscribers and it's kind of easy to see why. Despite lukewarm reviews for the film, Sandra Bullock is a likable movie star and just led Ocean's 8 earlier this past summer. This year also saw the release of the hugely successful A Quiet Place, and Bird Box appeared to be a similar type of film. It might have drawn in audiences looking for another high-concept story with major thrills.

When a big new movie releases theatrically, by weekend's end we have a pretty good idea the amount of people who saw it and how successful it was. In contrast, Netflix doesn't usually release its viewership numbers, leaving everyone to speculate about the success of a show or movie based on buzz and cancellations/renewals.

Netflix only tends to tell people about viewership numbers when something is a success, as is the case here. Nevertheless, this new viewing record is positively huge and made all the more so when comparing it to some of the other movies Netflix has clued us in on.

For example, the holiday movie The Christmas Chronicles was watched 20 million times in its first week, according to Netflix's Ted Sarandos. That isn't even half of what Bird Box is said to have done. Likewise the huge action/sci-fi film Bright starring Will Smith, which released last year in the same time frame as Bird Box, is estimated to have done 11 million views in the first three days.

As is always the case when Netflix talks about viewership numbers, it is worth noting that there are some specifics that we don't know. Over 45 million accounts watched Bird Box, but we don't know if they all watched it all the way through. It is for that and other reasons that that equating Bird Box's streaming views to a box office in the hundreds of millions is folly.

But even if not all of those people watched beginning to end, or would have paid to see it in theaters, the fact that it performed better than any other previous Netflix movie -- and over 45 million accounts tuned in to at least check out Bird Box -- shows that there was genuine interest in the film.
