What Doctor Strange Is Really About, According To The Director

It's no secret that superhero movies are everywhere. Chief among them is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which brought serialized storytelling to the genre, and a ton of colorful characters to the silver screen. But with every studio creating shared universes of their own, the comic book genre can become a bit saturated and muddled.

Scott Derrickson directed 2016's Doctor Strange for Marvel, introducing the Sorcerer Supreme to a wide audience for the first time, welcoming Benedict Cumberbatch into the shared universe in the process. He recently explained the point of his blockbuster, saying:

I can't say much about the meaning of other superheroes, but to me Doctor Strange has always been about the significance of trauma, mysticism, and personal growth.

Well, this makes a great deal of sense. Doctor Strange's title character had a massive arc throughout the course of the movie, and was a thoroughly changed man by the time he started crossing over with Marvel's finest in Avengers: Infinity War. He was still a cocky guy, but his MCU debut was rooted in Stephen Strange's personal growth.

Scott Derrickson's recent Doctor Strange comments come to us from Twitter, where the director is known to regularly interacting with Marvel fans. This tidbit seemed unsolicited though, as it wasn't a response to a fan tweet. Instead, Derrickson dropped some pearls of wisdom about the blockbuster without prompting, to fans' joy.

When Stephen Strange is introduced at the start of Doctor Strange he's pretty much insufferable. His ego is massive, and he treats everyone around him like they're less than-- including Rachel McAdams' Christine Palmer. But the renowned surgeon is served a giant slice of humble pie after a horrifying car accident, where his hands were rendered useless and his career was seemingly ruined forever.

This sets off the film's true events, as Stephen Strange attempts to find a mystical way to heal his wounds, and presumably set his life back on track. But he gets much more than he bargained for, and is trained by The Ancient One and Wong, before facing off against massively powerful foes like Kaecilius and Dormammu.

Both trauma and mysticism aren't themes that typically run through the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. While Scarlet Witch was introduced back in Avengers: Civil War, her powers don't actually seem to come from a magical place. Doctor Strange broke new ground in that way, opening up magic, mysticism, and mind-blowing visual affects for the shared universe.

Stephen Strange's relationship to his car wreck is the root of his trauma, giving audiences a deeper look into the protagonist's psyche. Suddenly he's not just a textbook success with a god complex, but one with deep psychotic trouble.

Doctor Strange will presumably return to the MCU when Avengers 4 arrives in theaters May 3rd. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Bruce Willis Die Hard 6 Just Made An Unusual Hire

The word was that the next Die Hard movie was going to be a very different sort of movie, and that seems to have been reinforced by the recent hiring of the screenwriters. The new movie is supposed to be an "origin story" sort of movie, that includes both the return of Bruce Willis and the casting of a new actor to play a younger John McClane. That by itself makes the new film a very different animal, but now the studio has hired Chad and Carey Hayes, the twin brother writing team behind The Conjuring movies, to pen the script.

It's an interesting decision considering that horror has been the stock in trade for the pair for the better part of the last decade. In addition to The Conjuring movies, the Hayes brothers wrote the House of Wax remake as well as films like The Reaping and The Crucifixion. The pair was previously attached to write a pair of non-horror movies with the two planned sequel's to Dwayne Johnson's Journey movie, but based on recent comments by Johnson himself, those projects are either dead, or, at the very least, looking for a new star.

One certainly wonders if the decision to bring in writers known for horror is part of the plan for the new Die Hard movie. While we would never expect a Die Hard prequel to be a straight horror movie, perhaps the plan is to set the story apart by making it a darker tale. The entire concept of a Die Hard prequel is a bit strange, to begin with, since the entire premise of the original film is that John McClane is in over his head and has never experienced anything like that before. If the prequel were a straight action movie with a similar theme, it would seem to conflict with the other installments, so maybe this movie is looking to set itself apart in more ways than one.

According to The Tracking Board, the pair is rewriting the script, which implies that there was one already, but that it wasn't quite what they were looking for. Bruce Willis made recent comments that he was going to be checking out the script, so perhaps he took issue with it. While the movie is being described as a prequel, it seems the plan is for the story to shift between two time periods, allowing Bruce Willis to appear as well as having a new actor play a younger John McClane. It's unclear if Chad and Carey Hayes are starting from scratch or making changes to the existing version of the story.

Either way, it seems clear that a new Die Hard movie is on the horizon, even if we're not quite sure what it's going to look like.




Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) is set to produce and direct the action sequel, which will see Bruce Willis return once again as supercop John McClane. The film is rumored to be an origin story of sorts, in which we see a younger actor portray McClane as a (relatively) regular cop in 1970s New York.

The next movie in the Jurassic Park franchise will see the return of Jeff Goldblum in the role he made famous in the original Jurassic Park, but Chris Pratt would love to see another actor return in a future installment. Laura Dern has previously made comments implying that she would be more than willing to return to a future Jurassic World and reprise the role of Dr. Ellie Sadler. For what it's worth, Chris Pratt thinks this is a fantastic idea. Jurassic World brought the Jurassic Park franchise back from the dead like a cloned dinosaur, but since the new films are technically sequels to the original trilogy, the characters that made the original Jurassic Park a hit are still out there in the world someplace. Dr. Ellie Sadler was a paleobotanist who was brought in with paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), who she also happened to be personally involved with, to give their seal of approval to the original design for Jurassic Park. They were unable to recommend the park, however, what with all the T.Rex's eating people and various other technical issues.

With Jeff Goldblum joining Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, it's clear that the new movies want to remind fans of the original series, so the door is quite possibly open for Laura Dern to return. And since she's shown interest in doing just that, it could very well happen. The only other thing we need is a third Jurassic World movie, and we already know that's going to happen. All the pieces are in place for Laura Dern's return, and Chris Pratt tells ET that, as far as he's concerned, she's in.

We know that the story and screenplay for Jurassic World 3 is currently being worked on by Emily Carmichael and director Colin Trevorrow. With the new film not set to hit theaters until 2021, they've got a bit of time to fine-tune the script. In the meantime, we'll always have Dr. Ian Malcolm, who will return in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom when it hits theaters June 22.
