Ant-Man And The Wasp Could Have Made Michelle Pfeiffer The Villain

The plot of Ant-Man and the Wasp was all about coming to the rescue of Janet Van Dyne, but apparently, her character could have turned out very differently. While the Janet we met in the newest MCU movie was a kind person whose first act back in reality is to help somebody trying to hurt her, it seems that there were early conversations that, had things gone differently, could have made Janet Van Dyne the villain of the film. Ant-Man and the Wasp director Peyton Reed was recently asked about the speculation that Janet could become a bad guy in the future and he revealed that the possibility had already been discussed at the beginning. I can say that it was certainly one of the things that we talked about.

The idea of the original Wasp being the bad guy isn't that crazy an idea. She's been stuck in the Quantum Realm for decades at this point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She's had no human contact in that time. It's entirely conceivable she could have gone mad in that period. Either that, or she's simply become furious for being left there for so long and wants revenge on people for not finding a way to get her out.

Even the version of Ant-Man and the Wasp that we saw, which focused on Ghost as the, somewhat sympathetic, villain of the piece, could have seen Janet Van Dyne go in a very different direction. When she put her hands on Ghost in order to infuse her with energy that helped heal her, I honestly thought she might fry the girl's brain or otherwise use the quantum energy to destroy her. It didn't end up going that way, but it could have.

With Peyton Reed admitting that discussions took place which saw Janet Van Dyne as a villain, it makes one wonder what the future might hold. The original question from CBR wondered if Janet could become a villain down the road, and if the idea was considered once, it certainly could be again.

It would make for an interesting idea. Seeing heroes become villains is a classic trope in comic books but it's not something we've seen in the MCU yet. We've seen "good" people turned evil through various means, but never a character that had been previously well established as a hero. It's likely a matter of time before that happens. Michelle Pfeiffer would probably make for a fantastic comic book supervillain.

There almost certainly will be more to the story of Janet Van Dyne in the future of the MCU. Exactly what happened to her in the Quantum Realm and what the long-term consequences of that are was barely dealt with in Ant-Man and the Wasp. It seems quite likely this will make for an important storyline in some future MCU film. The only question is what it means for the character of the original Wasp.

One X-Men: Dark Phoenix Actor Is Down For A Spinoff

Marvel characters have absolutely dominated the box office in the past few months, and that's not going to stop anytime soon. Both Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 were met with positive critical reception and made tons of money at the box office. And while the MCU will continue on with Ant-Man and The Wasp, the X-Men franchise's next installment is coming with X-Men: Dark Phoenix. 20th Century Fox is bringing its second attempt at the iconic storyline from the comics, and one cast member is ready for a spinoff of his own. Evan Peters has played Quicksilver in the past two X-Men movies (plus a Deadpool 2 cameo), and when asked if he'd be interested in a standalone film, Peters recently said:

I think that would be so fun. I love the special effects and the sequences and I love working with all those guys, so in one second I would do that.

On top of giving the answer all the fans were hoping for, you've got to love Evan Peters for working in a time joke. His signature character can do quite a lot in one second, and Peters seems game to further flesh out Peter Maximoff in a solo flick.

Evan Peter's comments to Entertainment Tonight are sure to be exciting for the many X-Men fans who adore Peter's characterization of Quicksilver. While the character originally had one epic sequence in Days of Future Past, he was brought into the team and the Mansion in Apocalypse. Now that he is a full fledged X-Man, it should be interesting to see how he operates differently in X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Narratively, there is certainly a lot for Peter to unpack in a potential standalone film. The most obvious thread to pull is his relationship with Michael Fassbender's Magneto, his biological father. While Quicksilver knows that, he has yet to confront Magneto about it. It would be great to dive into the character's history and relationship with family-- and how that affects his chosen family in the X-Men.

Of course, this could very well be explored in Dark Phoenix. The sequel has been keeping its contents under wraps, only teasing that it's a cosmic adventure focusing on the psyche of Sophie Turner's Jean Grey. If Michael Fassbender intends to leave the franchise after the upcoming sequel, then it would be the right time to explore his relationship with Quicksilver. Much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the X-Men franchise's stars are all mostly freed from their contracts, meaning actors like Fassbender, James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence could call it quits at any moment.

All will be revealed when X-Men: Dark Phoenix arrives in theaters on February 14, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

This Rotten Week: Predicting Life Of The Party And Breaking In Reviews

Hollywood is still living in the wake of Avengers: Infinity War, so we don't have any major blockbusters on tap this week. What we do have, however, is two very different movies about moms: one heading back to college, and one trying to protect her family from a crew of home invaders. Get ready for Breaking In and Life of the Party.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

Imagine if your mom and dad got divorced and then your mom decided to drop everything and enroll in college with you. I know, I know. It's horrifically easy to picture - and that's what makes Life of The Part__y ultra-realistic. Melissa McCarthy goes to get some higher learning, this time with her daughter, and they navigate the world of sex, partying and (probably) academics along the way. It looks ridiculous and not in the "super funny and out there" kind of way, but in the "very stupid" vein. I suspect there are some redeeming elements, but way too many silly joke-seeking moments to make the film redeemable.

This is the third director-writer team up of Ben Falcone and Melissa McCarthy, who also happen to be husband and wife in addition to producing partners. The first two didn't go all that well, as both scored less than 25 percent on the Tomatometer (Tammy - 24%; The Boss - 22%). I doubt this latest does much better.

If the movies can be believed (and I think they can), then secluded cabins come in only two forms: the decrepit and dilapidated kind that's terrorized by evildoers, or the ultra-modern and tech-infused kind that's terrorized by evildoers. There's really no middle ground with these places, and no matter if you're staying in the 5-star or 1-star Airbnb rental in the woods, you're still getting terrorized. It kind of just comes with the territory, so you might as well stay in the nicer place. That's the case with Breaking In, in which Gabrielle Union takes the kids to her deceased father's place and robbers take over the compound. Now she's got to fight to get the kids safe.

James McTeigue kicked off his directorial career with the well-received V for Vendetta (75%), but it's been all downhill hill from there. Subsequent films, including Ninja Assassin (25%), The Raven (22%) and Survivor (9%), all fell well short of Fresh. This latest looks like it will finish along the lines of McTeigue's most recent work. It looks slick enough, but we've been down this road many times, and I don't suspect this film brings anything new to the table.

I went two for three last week with my predictions, and it was not a bad showing all around. Tully (Predicted: 80% Actual: 89%) ended up being an overwhelming critical success and another win for Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody as director and writer. It's not easy getting "real" about modern-day motherhood, with most movies opting for cliche and unrealistic looks at the pressures. It doesn't look like this film fell victim in that sense, and critics had near universal praise for everything from the tone to the writing to the performance by Charlize Theron.

Meanwhile, Bad Samaritan (Predicted: 52% Actual: 56%) was another predictive win. Often these kinds of thriller/suspense/horror films finish low on the Tomatometer because they are all gore/ scares and little substance. I suspected this one had just a little more in the tank based on the story, cinematography, and tone. I was right, and it finished just above the halfway mark. Honestly, for this genre, this is a pretty damn good score.

And finally, Overboard (Predicted: 10% Actual: 30%) stunk, but not as bad as I thought. The film looked like a bottom-of-the-barrel offering with almost no redeeming qualities, but just enough critics were able to give it a thumbs up to keep the movie out of the basement. It still goes down as a stinker on the Tomatometer, but I honestly thought it had a strong chance to finish in the single digits.

It's certainly true that Sacha Baron Cohen is best known for comedic roles, so perhaps the actor was planning on playing Mercury in some sort of humorous way. Freddie Mercury was certainly flamboyant and over-the-top as far as his stage persona goes, so one could see how something like that might work.

It could also be that Cohen just didn't give the movie much attention, and that was seen as not taking it seriously. Though that could simply be because the film clearly wasn't that far along. The fact that it would take half a decade from the point Sacha Baron Cohen left the project for the movie to actually make it on the screen, in addition to the three years he was attached, shows that a lot of work needed to be done.

Roger Taylor tells the Associated Press that having Cohen take the Mercury role "was never really on." This is probably because the film was in such an obviously early state that nobody had actually signed any contracts. Cohen may have expressed interest and the producers may have been interested in getting him, but there wasn't enough set in stone for it to be more than that.

And based on what Sacha Baron Cohen has said, that sounds like it may have been the case. The actor had previously stated that one of his issues with the movie was that, in the story he was given, Freddie Mercury died in the middle of the film and the rest of the story focused on how the band handled the aftermath. That's not the story of Bohemian Rhapsody, so clearly things changed over the years.

After Sacha Baron Cohen left the project, Ben Whishaw was tapped to play Freddie Mercury, though he eventually left the project as well to make room for Rami Malek, who plays the Queen lead singer in the new film.
