Logan Was The Most Complained About Film In The UK Last Year

Last year's Logan seemed like it was generally pretty well loved by everybody who saw it, but it seems that's not quite the case everywhere. It turns out that no movie resulted in more complaints to the U.K.'s British Board of Film Classification. The body in charge of rating films in the UK reportedly received 20 separate complaints from viewers who felt the BBFC gave Logan the wrong rating.

The BBFC gave Logan a 15 rating and it seems that at least 20 people felt that due to the film's violence was strong enough that it should have been given the next rating up, 18. The numbers are equivalent to the ages that are allowed to view the film, so in this case, Logan was deemed acceptable for 15-year-olds, but some felt that the violence was such that it should have been limited to 18-year-olds.

According to the BBFC report, via The Guardian, the 15 rating was in accordance with the organization's guidelines as, while some of the violence was certainly strong, the film's fast cuts meant that the violence was focused on the action, rather than the infliction of pain. The superhero nature of the violence also helped distance it from more realistic depictions of violence, thus making the 15 rating acceptable.

The British Board of Film Classification rating system doesn't match up perfectly with that of the MPAA, mostly because it has the 15 rating in the first place, a step which the MPAA doesn't have. As such, Logan was rated-R here, limiting the film to those 17 or older, which is basically what those complaining to the BBFC wanted to see there.

This isn't the first time that the X-Men spinoff movies from Fox have been the home of complaints to the BBFC, in 2016 the top movie to receive complaints was Deadpool, which received 51 complaints about receiving the same 15 rating. In that regard, Logan apparently got off easy.

While film ratings are important as a way to help audiences know what they're getting into, this certainly goes to show that they are more art than science. Everybody's kids are different and what might be suitable for some 15-year-olds, or what their parents might consider suitable for them, isn't going to be the case for every 15-year-old. While the added rating level of a 15 might make sense for some films, deciding what falls into a 15 rating and what is strong enough content wise for an 18 may be splitting hairs in a lot of cases. You can't make everybody happy, but in a place the size of the UK, only 20 complaints makes it look they made most people happy.

What We Know About Ivan Drago's Return In Creed 2

Although Creed was perfectly enjoyable to watch on its own, ultimately it served as another piece of the wider Rocky mythology. After all, Michael B. Jordan's Adonis Creed is the son of the late Apollo Creed, who died in the ring boxing Russian powerhouse Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. Creed spent less time delving into Adonis' family ties and more into him training with Rocky Balboa to get his professional boxing career off the ground. So if Creed echoed the original Rocky, then Creed 2 unquestionably echoes Rocky IV, as the sequel sees Adonis going mano a mano with Viktor Drago, Ivan's son. And just like Adonis has Rocky in his corner for support, Viktor has daddy Drago, being reprised by Dolph Lundgren. The older Ivan was finally shown in the new Creed 2 trailer today, and the preview made it clear that more than 30 years after we last saw him, his intensity hasn't diminished.

Often considered one of the greatest villains in the Rocky franchise, Ivan Drago was introduced in 1985's Rocky IV as the Soviet Union's best boxer, his strength unparalleled thanks to a combination of training and injection of an unnamed substance (assumed to be steroids). Unlike the boastful Clubber Lang from Rocky III, Ivan was a man of few words and only had one goal: to be the best fighter in the world. He proved just how powerful he was when he killed Apollo Creed, who didn't take Ivan seriously enough, with multiple blows to the head. As if killing an opponent in the ring wasn't bad enough, Ivan also didn't express any remorse for Apollo's death, having earlier uttered the famous line, "If he dies, he dies." Not taking the death of his friend sitting down, Rocky challenged Ivan to their own fight, and after going through an intense '80s training montage, our esteemed protagonist came out victorious after 15 rounds. The later Rocky movies never addressed what happened to Ivan afterwards, but the damage Rocky sustained during that fight led to brain damage, which played into his struggles during Rocky V.

This brings us to Creed 2, where Ivan Drago is back after more than 30 years and has trained his son Viktor for his own boxing career. Dolph Lundgren has previously said that he was initially hesitant to reprise Ivan after all this time because he didn't want to hurt the "image" of this iconic character, but after reading the Creed 2 script and seeing that this movie was a chance to show Ivan's "damaged, struggling side," he signed on. This suggests that Creed 2 will explore Ivan's vulnerabilities; whether they're physical (maybe injecting that junk took a toll on his body) or psychological.

However, that doesn't mean that Ivan will be any less of an antagonistic figure. As Rocky notes in the new Creed 2 trailer, Viktor Drago was "raised in hate," implying that Ivan did whatever it took to ensure his son would also be a great fighter, no matter what the cost. And clearly Rocky's fight with Ivan still heavily looms in his mind, as he tells Adonis that Ivan broke things in him "that ain't ever been fixed" and he doesn't want Adonis to suffer a similar fate going up against Viktor.

Just like how Rocky didn't step back into the ring for Creed, we shouldn't expect Ivan Drago to either for Creed 2, although that doesn't necessarily preclude him from getting into a tussle with someone outside of a boxing setting. That said, since the news anchor in the Creed 2 trailer says that it's Viktor Drago who challenges Adonis rather than the other way around, I wouldn't be surprised if this was done on Ivan's urging. He can no longer fight professionally, but having seen Adonis rise up in the boxing world, he sees this as an opportunity for his son to knock the main protagonist off his perch and bring some glory back to the Drago name. And just like what happened with Apollo, if Viktor happens to kill Adonis in the ring, so be it.

This Rotten Week: Predicting Operation Finale And Kin Reviews

We are still a week away from Labor Day so some summer movies are still left in the clip. Audiences are getting smaller, and so are the movies, but never will we see a weekend without at least one new release. This time around we've got the Mossad hunting down the architect of the Holocaust, and a kid who finds a mysterious weapon. Get ready for Operation Finale and Kin.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

After World War II, in the wake of the German defeat to the Allies, some of the highest ranking Nazi leaders scattered around the world so as to avoid being tried for war crimes. Adolf Eichmann, essentially the man behind the design of the atrocities committed against the Jewish people, was one of the officers who escaped. That is, until the Mossad tracked him down in Argentina 20 years later and brought him back to Israel to stand trial. Operation Finale details the mission to confirm Eichmann's identity in Argentina and extract him. It's a heavy set of circumstances, and the trailer has a Munich-like feel to it.

Unfortunately, critics don't appear overly impressed with the film. Through 12 reviews, it's sitting at 58% on the Tomatometer with some critics saying it lacks the depth and gravitas of the subject it's dealing with. This isn't to say it's getting panned, but it just seems underwhelming. Director Chris Weitz has been attached to a lot of films in different roles, but his other work in the big chair hasn't stood up with the critics. The Golden Compass (42%) and The Twilight Saga: New Moon (28%) both finished lower on the Tomatometer. I'm worried this one will as well.

For the second week in a row we now have a film where some kid wanders into a random place and walks out with some ultra-cool, ridiculously powerful weapon of unknown origins. Last week it was A.X.L. and this time around we get Kin. In this one, a young boy finds a futuristic gun in an abandoned warehouse and uses it to protect his recently-released convict brother. It really all looks so ham-fisted and silly with the only thing kind of throwing me off is having James Franco around as one of the antagonists.

This is the first feature from directors Josh and Jonathan Baker, and I can't imagine they kick things off all that well with the critics. The story appears both convoluted and overly simple at the same time, with some tired themes being retrodden around this mystery weapon (which couldn't look faker). I have a feeling this one finishes with a real low score.

We had one hit and one miss last week with the Rotten Watch. A.X.L (Predicted: 27% Actual: 22%) fell right in range, and honestly, I would have been real surprised if it finished higher than 30%. The whole thing, from the premise, to the acting, to the effects, very much fit the mold of "late summer action movie." (that's not a compliment). I get that it was made almost exclusively for a narrow age range of viewers (think 10-12), and almost no one else.

Meanwhile, The Happytime Murders (Predicted: 68% Actual: 22%) was a big-time miss. I thought there would be enough laughs in what looked like a creative take on the puppet world from Brian Henson, one of the kids of the master, Jim Henson. Sure, it was a bunch of raunchy jokes coming from puppets, but I thought that would be good enough for at least a little love. Nope. This thing bombed, and I finished more than 45 points off. Besides critics having a field day with puppet analogies in their reviews, they also took it to task for a lazy story and not enough laughs. What a shame.
